Local Taliban leader killed in E. Afghan province: gov't

A local Taliban leader has been killed in an operation in Afghanistan's eastern province of Ghazni, said the country's Interior Ministry on Tuesday.

"An Afghan National Police (ANP) unit killed a Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Shokor along with three of his associates during an operation in Ghazni province on Sunday evening," the ministry said in a statement.

The statement said Shokor served as Taliban shadow judge in Abbad district of the province, 125 km south of Kabul.

"Shokor was responsible for extrajudicial murdering of several innocent Afghans in Ghazni. He was also directly responsible for several terrorist activities and ambush attacks targeting Afghan security forces," the statement noted.

The ANP also found and confiscated several rounds of weapons and ammunition, the statement said, adding no member of the ANP was hurt during the raid.

The Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations against militants since early April after Taliban militants started their so-called annual spring offensive and stepped up attacks across the country.

The militant group has yet to make comments. Endit
