TAZARA projects to double cargo movement by June 2017: official

Xinhua, July 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is set to move about 380,000 metric tons of cargo by June 2017, an increase of over 100 percent compared to the past, a senior official said Saturday.

Bruno Ching'andu, TAZARA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said that the volume will be realized due to new leadership with vision and wide managerial experiences as well as commitments shown by governments of moving traffic from road to rail.

The 2014/2015 fiscal year was the worst when it comes to the TAZARA performance whereby the authority managed to move only 88,000 metric tons, though things slightly improved in the just-ended financial year, whereby the Chinese-built railway line moved 130,000 metric tons of cargo.

"But, now we're very optimistic to meet the 380,000 metric tons target because the supply of fuel and lubricants for operations has been stabilized with all fuel debts fully settled," the newly appointed TAZARA boss reaffirmed.

Other factors, according to Ching'andu, include the end of industrial unrest and stable labour situation as workers are now getting their salaries on time.

The official also said thefts of cargo have been completely eliminated due to speedy movements of trains, improved transit times and more vigilant security measures put in place.

TAZARA Railway line links the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania with the town of Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia's Central Province.

Built from 1970 to 1975, the single-track railway is 1,860 km long and is operated by the TAZARA. Endite
