Man killed for alleged sexual harassment in Egypt

Xinhua, July 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

An 18-year-old man was stabbed to death on Friday over allegedly harassing a girl in the Upper Egyptian province of Beni Suef, state-run Ahram Online reported.

A brawl broke out between the young man and the brother of the alleged verbally assaulted girl after the latter attempted to complain the harassment.

The dispute, which occurred on the last day of the feast marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, escalated to the death of the alleged harasser, whose brother was also wounded, the report added.

Sexual harassment has been common in large crowds in Egypt, especially at feasts and protests.

Egypt issued a law in 2014 that punishes sexual harassers with up to five years in jail, or fine of at least 3,000 Egyptian pounds (about 337 U.S. dollars).

Some policewomen have been deployed with intensified presence during the current feast in parks and other public places, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. Endit
