Belarus sees no direct threat in NATO troop deployment near border: FM

Xinhua, July 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

The deployment of additional NATO troops in the neighboring countries poses no direct security threat to Belarus, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said on Tuesday.

"We certainly do not welcome the deployment of additional troops in the Baltic states and Poland, but we can understand the logic of our partners and why they take such steps," Makei said after a meeting with his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevics.

Belarus is not a big country to take any radical measures to build up its military capacity in response to such actions, but will be keeping an eye on the development of the situation, the minister added.

He said the main thing is to avoid getting obsessed with building up armaments on both sides of the border, thereby fanning military tensions.

All the stakeholders, including NATO, Russia and Belarus, and separate NATO member states, need to establish, as fast as possible, a direct and honest dialogue in a bid to build up bilateral and multilateral trust, the minister stressed. Endi
