At least 47 people died during Zambia's long weekend in various road traffic accidents, the police said on Thursday.
Zambia police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the number was an increase compared to 29 people who died during the Heroes and Unity Holiday last year, representing a 62 percent rise.
He said in a statement that a total number of 282 road traffic accidents were recorded during the period as compared to last year's 285, indicating a decrease of three road traffic accidents.
The Copperbelt Province recorded the highest number with 66 road traffic accidents, followed by the Lusaka Province with 64, while southern and central Zambia recorded 34 accidents each, he added.
The police spokesperson said 29 people sustained serious injuries while 65 sustained slight injuries.
The increase in accidents has been attributed to human error such as over-speeding and non-compliance to road traffic rules and regulations by motorists and pedestrians. Endit
