Bulgaria seizes nearly 200 kg of heroin at border with Turkey

Xinhua, July 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian law enforcement authorities seized nearly 200 kg of heroin at the country's Lesovo checkpoint at its border with Turkey, officials said here on Wednesday.

The illicit drug was discovered on Tuesday after an X-ray examination of a truck with an Iranian registration carrying cans of tomato paste from Iran to the Netherlands, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.

"Four hundred cans filled with heroin were found," the statement said.

Authorities estimated the value of the heroin on the black market would exceed 10 million U.S. dollars.

The driver of the truck, a 42-year-old Iranian citizen, was arrested on the scene, the statement said. Endit
