Residents in China's eastern coastal areas were told to brace for gales and downpours as the first typhoon of the season headed toward Taiwan on Wednesday.
Typhoon Nepartak was spotted 880 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's Hualien City at 2 p.m. and is moving west-northwest at a speed of 25 kilometers an hour, the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center said.
It predicted that Nepartak will bring storm surges on Thursday and Friday mainly in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.
The State Oceanic Administration (SOA) has initiated a class-II emergency response, the second highest level.
Strong winds are expected east of Taiwan, near Diaoyu Islands, in the south of East China Sea, off the southern coast of Zhejiang and off the northern coast of Fujian on Wednesday night. Endi
