Burkina Faso PM promises to sack any corrupt minister

Xinhua, July 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso Prime Minister Paul Kaba Thieba on Tuesday promised to sack any minister who is found engaging in corruption.

"If you can prove that a minister has been found embezzling public funds, I can assure you the concerned individual will leave government the next day," Thieba said when he spoke on the national broadcaster.

In Burkina Faso, where half of the population lives on less than one dollar per day, "87.4 percent believe corruption is a scourge that has destroyed the country's economy," a recent survey by the National Anti-Corruption Network showed.

Since 2015 when Burkina Faso was led by a transitional government, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to fight corruption.

On April 28, the government announced that public servants would not be allowed to accept gifts valued above 53 euros.

In June, the National Anti-Corruption Network launched in Ouagadougou a television series aimed at sensitizing the population and denouncing cases of corruption. Endit
