Overnight stays in Swiss hotels rise to over 2.6 mln in May: report

The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) reported Tuesday that 2.65 million overnight hotel reservations were made in May this year, up 1.3 percent from a year ago.

Figures show the number of hotel reservations made by Swiss guests increased by 1.9 percent (1.1 million stays), while bookings made by their foreign counterparts registered a 0.9-percent increase, reaching 1.5 million.

According to FSO, the number of EU guests staying in Switzerland increased by 3.2 percent compared to May 2015.

The number of tourists hailing from Asia decreased however, with a 2.7-percent drop in overnight hotel stays documented.

Chinese tourists in particular registered a marked decrease, with 21,000 (minus 16.7 percent) fewer reservations recorded in the month under review.

FSO indicated that 10 out of 14 Swiss tourist regions reported a rise in overnight hotel stays in May compared to the same period last year.

The cumulative total of nocturnal hotel stays in the confederation between January and May this year stands at 13.7 million, down 0.7 percent compared to the same period in 2015. Endit
