Indian PM to reshuffle cabinet Tuesday

Xinhua, July 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to rejig his cabinet of ministers Tuesday, inducting some new faces and dropping a few non-performers, sources said Monday.

However, there will be no change in the top four ministries -- Home, Finance, Defence and External Affairs -- though Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who holds the information and broadcasting portfolio, may also shed the additional charge, the sources said.

Two parliamentarians from the politically important northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh -- Anupriya Patel and Mahendra Pandey -- are likely to be sworn in as new ministers, a move that would be taken keeping in view of assembly elections in the state next year, the sources said.

In fact, both the lawmakers met the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah at his residence in the national capital Monday, along with a few others, including two parliamentarians -- Purushottam Rupala and Mansukhbhai Mandavia from Modi's home state of Gujarat in western India, the sources said.

The cabinet currently consists of 66 ministers, including the prime minister, as against the 82 mandated by the Indian Constitution. Endit
