Police release 41 opposition protesters in Gambia

Xinhua, July 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Police have released 41 protesters of the opposition United Democratic party (UDP) in The Gambia on Thursday evening.

They were released on bail after weeks in detention since the first week of May and were later transferred to the country's provincial region of North Bank.

Some members of UDP were seen with their families at home including one Mustapha Ceesay of Tallinding.

The 41 were arrested on their way from attending the trial of their party leader Ousainou Darboe in the capital Banjul.

A total of 71 members of the opposition party, together with UDP chief Ousainou Darboe, had been arrested and charged with conspiracy after they held a demonstration to protest the death in custody of UDP's national organising secretary Solo Sandeng and to demand political reforms. Endit
