Cameron wants "constructive" exit process with EU

Xinhua, June 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

London seeks "constructive" divorce procedures from the European Union (EU), British Prime Minister David Cameron said Tuesday.

"This afternoon, I will be explaining that Britain will be leaving the European Union, but I want that process to be as constructive as possible and I hope the outcome can be as constructive as possible," Cameron said at his arrival upon a two-day EU summit.

"While we are leaving the European Union, we mustn't be turning our backs on Europe. These countries are our neighbors, our friends, our allies, our partners," he told reporters.

Britain will seek "the closest possible relationship" with European countries in terms of trade, cooperation and security, Cameron said. "Because that is good for us and that is good for them."

EU's 28 leaders are gathering here to discuss the UK's referendum vote last Thursday, in which 52 percent of voters favored leaving the bloc.

Cameron is set to explain the situation at the summit and leave Brussels this evening. The other 27 EU leaders, without Cameron, are scheduled to hold an informal meeting on Wednesday.

European Council President Donald Tusk said before the summit that Brussels will not start the exit talks without London's notification.

According to EU treaties, the British government has to initiate exit process by notifying the European Council. Endit
