The three-day International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament Verification meeting began in Tokyo on Tuesday, comprising 26 countries both nuclear and non-nuclear as well as the European Union.
During the three-day meeting, it is hoped that nuclear and non-nuclear countries, some of which have opposing ideas on nuclear policy, can find common ground on disarmament verification as a step towards broader non-proliferation efforts.
"I strongly hope that this meeting will be an exemplary case in which nuclear weapon and non-nuclear weapon states can engage in fruitful discussions and work hand in hand toward a world free of nuclear weapons," Parliamentary Vice Foreign Minister Hitoshi Kikawada was quoted as saying at the beginning of the meeting in Tokyo.
