Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said on Friday Britain is to remain Lithuania's key security and economic partner.
In her audio announcement aired on Friday, Grybauskaite said the country respects the decision of the British people to leave the European Union(EU), though she admitted that in the short term the EU will feel the consequences of the decision.
"Later, however, we will find a common model for the EU and the UK to live together," said Grybauskaite.
"It is our duty to restore people's trust in the EU and preserve what we all have created," she added.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said the country wants the EU and Britain to retain close cooperation "especially, in the fields of foreign policy, security and internal market".
The country's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said he was expecting a different outcome of the voting, but said the decision has to be respected.
"The European project has to continue," Linkevicius told news website delfi.lt, admitting that the role of the EU will weaken after Britain's decision. Enditem
