Morocco remains world's major producer of cannabis: report

Xinhua, June 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Morocco continues to be the world's largest producer of cannabis resin, local media reported on Friday.

Citing the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime's World Drug Report 2016, Morocco's leading news site Hespress.com revealed that among 129 countries over the period 2009-2014, Morocco ranked first followed by Afghanistan, Lebanon, India and Pakistan in terms of cannabis production.

The same source noted that 32 percent of the global seizures of cannabis resin came from the countries in North Africa, mainly Morocco and Algeria.

It added that Western and Central Europe is the area where the largest amount of cannabis resin was seized, accounting for 40 percent of the global total.

The source underlined that cannabis resin from Morocco was mainly smuggled to Europe and other countries in North Africa. Endit
