Tokyo shares ended the trading Friday sharply lower with its benchmark Nikkei stock index losing nearly 8 percent after "leave" camp won in a British referendum on its membership of the European Union.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average plunged 1,286.33 points, or 7.92 percent, from Thursday to 14,952.02, after briefly tumbling over 8 percent by opening the afternoon session.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 94.23 points, or 7.26 percent, to 1,204.48.

All issues in the main session lost ground.

The day's turnover was about 3,338.3 billion yen (around 33.13 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
