Chilean player Eduardo Vargas knows what bad luck is. But during 2016 Centennial Copa America, he has shown great capacity to succeed, international media reported on Wednesday.
According to the regional tournament's official website, before the beginning of Copa America, Vargas was far from being in his best shape.
Between Oct. 17, 2015 and June 11, during 22 matches including the first two of the current tournament, Vargas had only scored one goal. Things were not good when Chile needed one point against Panama to guarantee its qualification to quarterfinals.
Vargas left behind the bad times and proved his capacity for success.
Chile was losing 0-1 in the first five minutes, but Vargas then scored two goals in the first half, helping his team to reach victory and quarterfinals.
In quarterfinals, the Chilean squad had to face Mexico. Vargas again showed his great capacity and scored four goals of the total seven to beat the Mexican team.
"It was unforgettable. It is the first time in my career that I score four goals in a game," said Vargas adding that "everything went good for us in the field and I was lucky to score four."
The six goals Vargas has scored in the last two games puts him as a strong candidate to win the Golden Shoe of Copa America. He is also about to become the top Chilean scorer in the regional tournament considering the six in the current edition and other four he scored in 2015.
"I am very happy to be the top scorer of Centennial Copa America. It is something special and I am enjoying it," said Vargas. Enditem
