Slovak interior minister to face another no-confidence motion

Xinhua, June 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kalinak should face another parliamentary no-confidence motion over his alleged ties to businessman Ladislav Basternak, who was investigated for tax fraud, chairman of Slovakia's Freedom and Solidarity Richard Sulik said on Tuesday.

According to Sulik, the opposition plans to submit a petition to that effect to Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko on Friday. Danko will then have seven days to convene a parliamentary session over the motion.

Kalinak survived a no-confidence vote over the same case earlier this month.

Following a demonstration on Monday, Freedom and Solidarity and OLaNO-NOVA have announced further protests in front of Prime Minister Robert Fico's private flat.

"If people care about the future of this country and their children, they'll come," stated OLaNO-NOVA chairman Igor Matovic, describing the first demonstration on Monday, which was attended by thousands of people, as a success.

Fico, for his part, has stated that Kalinak has his trust as well as that of the main governing party Smer-SD, and described the opposition's activities as hate-driven.

"I reject the politics of hatred and I'm sorry to see this opposition politics being carried into the streets," said Fico. Enditem
