Landslides and floods struck North Sulawesi province in central Indonesia on Tuesday, leaving four people missing and around 40 houses damaged, a senior official of disaster agency said.

Heavy downpours and tidal waves triggered the natural disaster in Kepulauan Sangihe district at about 5:00 a.m. local time (2200 GMT Monday), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency told Xinhua via phone.

Local disaster agency officials were assessing the damage of the disasters, including the number of injured persons, he added.

Soldiers, police, rescuers from local search and rescue office and volunteers, were undertaking emergency relief efforts, said Sutopo.
