1st LD: Death toll of Indonesia's flooding, landslides rises to 35, with 25 missing

Xinhua, June 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Flooding and landslides in Central Java province of western Indonesia had left 35 people dead and 25 missing, with 14 others wounded, a senior official from the disaster agency said on Sunday.

Search for the missing and evacuation of the affected people was still going on, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the national disaster management agency told Xinhua via phone.

Five machinery equipment and a drone were deployed to help the search and rescue operation, he added.

The districts of Purworejo, Banjarnegara and Kebumen are the hardest-hit areas, and most of the death toll came from there, Sutopo said.

Heavy downpours have triggered landslides and rivers overflowed their banks, submerging 16 districts and a city in the province, he said.

Landslides have also blocked roads that hampered the access to the disaster-affected-areas, Sutopo added.

Indonesia is frequently hit by floods and landslides during heavy downpours. Enditem
