Zambia road accident kills 5 pupils, 1 teacher

Five pupils and a teacher have died after a minibus they were traveling in hit into a stationary truck and overturned in southern Zambia' Choma town.

The accident happened on Friday night when the pupils from Hillcrest Technical High School in Livingstone, the provincial town of southern Zambia were traveling to a nearby town for school games.

Zambia Police acting spokesperson Esther Katongo said five of the victims died on the spot while the sixth one died on the way to a local hospital.

According to the police spokesperson, the accident happened when the driver of the minibus was trying to overtake a stationary truck but in the process hit into the same truck after seeing an oncoming vehicle.

Nine people are currently admitted to a local hospital while one has been evacuated to a big hospital in the provincial town. Twenty people were treated with minor injuries and discharged.

The Ministry of General Education has since expressed regret over the accident and canceled the school games, according to a statement released by the ministry. Endit
