Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced here on Thursday that an agreement has been reached to invest more than 900 million Canadian dollars (690 million U.S. dollars) to the infrastructure in British Columbia.
The deal was unveiled by the prime minister, B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson with a focus on public transit projects across the province.
"Canadians have asked us to reduce congestion and commute times in their cities. This investment in public transit will help the people of British Columbia get home to their loved ones faster. It will also help to grow the middle class by improving business flows in municipalities while reducing environmental damage," Trudeau said at the news conference in Vancouver.
The investments will be used to expand bus lanes, add new railcars to the SkyTrain, and deliver the fixes that the transit systems have needed for decades.
Trudeau's Liberals campaigned in last year's election on a plan to spend billions on infrastructure over 10 years, and in the most recent budget committed to covering up half the cost of such projects rather than the typical one-third contribution. Endit
