Kenyan beefs up security at Canadian High Commission amid bomb scare

Security has been beefed up around the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi after a bomb scare was reported there early Thursday.

Gigiri divisional police commander Vitalis Otieno said that Limuru road had been blocked following the alarm to allow bomb experts to establish if there is a bomb inside the embassy compound.

Otieno said Bomb Disposal Unit officers have arrived at the Commission which is near the UN headquarters in Nairobi after a parcel suspected to contain explosives was found inside a courier service vehicle.

"We have evacuated the staff to allow bomb experts to confirm the contents of the parcel which had been brought by courier service vehicle," Otieno said.

The head of the Bomb Disposal Unit Eliud Lagat said they are examining the content of the parcel to establish if there was a bomb in it.

The High Commission had earlier advised its staff to stay away as the confines were off-limits. The alert told those who had not arrived at the embassy to remain at home.

"The Canadian High Commission is currently off-limits. All Core Business Staff, Locally Engaged Staff and Spouses not currently at the Canadian High Commission are to remain at home. Update to follow," said the alert. Endit
