Senior Chinese official Meng Jianzhu on Wednesday called for deepening exchanges and cooperation in exit-entry affairs between the mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region while meeting with Hong Kong's new director of immigration Tsang Kwok-wai.

Meng, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, urged Tsang and his coworkers to perform their duties in accordance with the law, and continue to play an important role in securing Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability.

Meng, also member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, stressed advancing mainland-Hong Kong cooperation to make customs clearance more convenient and better serve the people.

During the meeting, Tsang vowed to work hard with all his colleagues for greater development and stability of Hong Kong and the motherland.

China's State Council appointed Tsang as director of Hong Kong's immigration department in April. Endi
