Food, non-alcoholic beverages dominate inflation hike in Namibia

The annual inflation rate for Food and non-alcoholic beverages was recorded at 12.2 percent in May 2016 as compared to 4.5 percent recorded in May of 2015, an increase of 7.7 percentage, according to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA).
The agency released, the Namibia Consumer Price Index on Wednesday and said all items index for the month of May 2016 stood at 119.4 an increase of 7.5 percentage points over the May 2015 index which stood at 111.9.
NSA said the hike emanated from increases recorded in the categories of food and non-alcoholic beverages.
According to their research, increases in the annual inflation rate for Food and non-alcoholic beverages for May 2016 were reflected in the price levels of fruits (20.6 percent), vegetables including potatoes and other tubers (20.0 percent), oils and fats (19.2 percent) and bread and cereals (16.1 percent).
Meanwhile other categories like housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose (from 2.5 to 7.6 percent), transport (from -3.3 to 1.5 percent), recreation and culture (from 3.2 to 6.4 percent), education (from 4.3 to 7.6 percent) and hotels, cafes and restaurant (from 5.2 to 9.1 percent).
Despite the rises, NSA noted that on a monthly basis, the general level of prices for May 2016 slowed to 0.5 as compared to 0.6 percent registered in the preceding month.
Currently the headline inflation rate for the month of May 2016 stood at 6.7 percent as compared to 3 percent recorded in may 2015, an increase of 3.7 percentage points, the agency said. Endit
