Central African nations to meet in Brussels for electrification funding

Xinhua, June 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Member states of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) will meet in Brussels on July 14 for a roundtable to seek funds for electrification projects in Central Africa, a source from the regional institution's headquarters in Libreville said Monday.

During the Brussels meeting, the ten ECCAS member states will seek to mobilize funds that will help the region achieve 54 percent access to electricity by the year 2030.

Central Africa remains the region with least access to electricity in Africa, with about 23 percent access rate, despite having huge energy potential, especially renewable energy.

The rate of electrification stands at 90 percent in North Africa and 41 percent in East and West Africa.

The average annual energy consumption by a Central African resident stands at 172 KWh, against 740KWh for the entire African continent and 1,617 KWh for southern Africa. Endite
