Indonesian car sales up almost 12 pct in May

Xinhua, June 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indonesia automobile sales in May rose nearly 12 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the industry association on Tuesday.

Car sales were recorded at 88,528 units last month, or 11.7 percent up from a year earlier, data from Indonesia's Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) showed.

On a monthly basis, the figure was also higher than 84,600 units sold in April, which marked the first month of annual sales increase.

The association targets automotive sales to grow 5 percent this year from 1.01 million units in 2015.

Car sales are seen as one of the indicators of household consumption in Indonesia, which account for more than half of the country's economy.

The Indonesian government expects GDP growth in the Southeast Asia's largest economy to reach 5.3 percent in 2016, expanding from last year's 4.8 percent, which was the country's slowest pace in six years. Endit
