Mexico draws Venezuela 1-1 in Copa America

Xinhua, June 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Mexico tied Venezuela 1-1 in their Copa America group final match at Houston's NRG Stadium here on Monday.

As both teams had already qualified for the knockout stage, Mexico only needed a draw to secure the first place of the group in order to avoid a probable quarterfinal matchup with tournament favorite Argentina.

Mexico dominated the play from the beginning but never found the net until Jesus Manuel Corona's sensational run in the 80th minute. Corona who missed several chances, took on five defenders before firing off a shot from 10 yards for the equalizer.

Venezuela had an earlier goal in 10th minute when Jose Manuel Velazquez received a header from Christian Santos and volleyed for the lead.

In the 84th minute, goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona ensured Mexico to share the points as he saved a bicycle kick from Venezuela's Josef Martinez. Endit
