Peruvian president-elect promises clean drinking water to all

Xinhua, June 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Peruvian President-elect Pedro Pablo Kuczynski announced Monday that his government will invest 15 billion U.S. dollars to make clean drinking water available in every part of Peru.

According to Kuczynski, who will assume presidency in July, this project will happen in his five-year term and possibly beyond.

"We will propose this law as part of our government's initial efforts and get to work. The money is not the problem, organization is," Kuczynski told a press conference.

The initiative seeks to address the difficult access to drinking water among around 14 percent of Peruvians, including some 700,000 people living in the poor neighborhoods of Lima.

Improving the country's drinking water distribution system has been a major promise made by Kuczynski during his presidential campaign.

The president-elect said he was also finalizing his cabinet and would announce its complete composition in the next two weeks, shortly ahead of the handover of power from President Ollanta Humala.

"We will seek to have a cabinet with a wide base, which represents the diverse perspectives of our country," Kuczynski said. Endi
