Xinhua, June 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bahamas' military apprehended 199 Haitian migrants who sought to illegally enter the country by boat over the weekend, reports reaching here from Nassau said on Monday.

The migrants were caught aboard a wooden sloop which was intercepted by a military patrol vessel of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF), off the west coast of Andros Island, according to daily newspaper the Bahamas Tribune.

Residents on the Andros Island provided food, drinks and logistical support to the migrants, who would be handed over to immigration authorities in New Providence, where they will wait for deportation, the newspaper cited the RBDF as saying.

The Bahamas has been a major transit point for illegal Caribbean migrants enroute to the United States. The majority of them are Haitians. Endi
