Ecuador celebrates after win over Haiti

Xinhua, June 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

After qualifying for the quarter-finals of Copa America Centenario on Sunday by beating Haiti 4-0, Ecuador celebrated on Monday with its newspapers reflecting the national mood.

The El Comercio daily hailed the fact that this win saw Ecuador return to the quarter-finals for the first time in 19 years, and added that "Ecuador was a real whirlwind from the start of the game."

The four goals were scored by Enner Valencia (10th minute) Jaime Ayoví (19th), Cristhian Noboa (56th) and Antonio Valencia (77th).

The Expreso daily reserved much of its praise for Ecuador's successful coach, Gustavo Quinteros.

The newspaper also expressed its hopes that this qualification would put an end to the squad's bad run of luck in the continental tournament.

"Ecuador had to wait 19 years to see its team get past the group phase of the Copa America and it did it with an overwhelming football against Haiti," it said.

It also added that, despite two draws against Brazil and Peru, Quinteros' tactics were shown to be the right ones. Endit
