The world's busiest airport said here Monday it welcomed in April 6.9 million passengers in April, a 7.2 percent year on year increase driven by Eastern Europe and Asia.

Dubai international airport, known short as DXB, also said, passengers from Eastern Europe topped the list with a 12.6 percent growth in April, followed by Asia (12.1 percent) and the Gulf Arab countries (10.3 percent).

Paul Griffiths, the CEO of Dubai Airports, said "with the summer travel peak round the corner, the numbers are only going to increase."

DXB also said in the first four months of 2016, it welcomed 27.9 million passengers, up 6.9 percent year on year.

In 2015, DXB, headquarters and home airport of Dubai's government-controlled Emirates Airline, welcomed over 78 million passengers, retaining the position as the world's busiest airport for global travelers for the second consecutive year.

Earlier in February this year, Griffiths opened the 1.2 billion dollars terminal "Concourse D" at the airport which boosted the annual capacity of the Middle East's biggest civil aviation hub to 90 million passengers. Endit
