A German man shot at a refugee shelter near his home with an air rifle, wounding two refugees, one of them a five-year-old girl, local police said on Monday.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon in the town of Lingen in western Germany, local police said in a statement.

The 21-year-old man shot from a window of his third-floor apartment which is about 40 meters away from the refugee shelter, slightly wounding a girl from Macedonia and a Syrian man, 18, in their legs.

Police searched the shooter's home and confiscated an air rifle and ammunition after receiving a witness report.

Police said an investigation was ongoing, and it was not clear whether the shooting was "politically motivated."

The two injured received out-patient treatment at a hospital, according to the police.

Crimes against refugees have grown in Germany as the number of asylum seekers entering the country has increased. Last year, more than one million refugees arrived in Germany, most of them from the war-torn Middle East. Endit
