Hamas slams nomination of Israel to chair UN committee

Xinhua, June 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Islamic Hamas movement on Monday slammed the nomination of Israel to chair a committee at the United Nations.

The move "is a shame for the UN, undermines its laws and encourages the occupation to continue in its terror policy against the Palestinians people," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zohri said in a statement.

The movement called on the UN to retract this nomination, describing it as "disastrous."

Israel was nominated by the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) for the presidency of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) sixth committee.

WEOG is a regional bloc that includes Israel.

The Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) urged bloc to withdraw the nomination of Israel and instead to question "its persistent violations of international law and human rights." Endit
