Visit of Arab League chief to West Bank postponed

Xinhua, June 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Arab League chief's visit to the West Bank has been postponed to be on Tuesday instead of Monday, the Palestinian presidency said, without mentioning the reasons for the decision.

During his two-day visit, Nabil Al-Araby is expected to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and visit Al-Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, the presidency said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the left-wing Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) lauded the stances of Al-Araby, but said his visit "carries many misunderstandings, especially as the U.S. administration, France and other states are pushing Arab countries to initiate normalization with Israel in order to encourage it to accept the French initiative.

The front called on the Arab countries to "resist all attempts to normalize ties with Israel and respond to the desire of the Arab public rejecting all forms of normalization."

A Palestinian source told Xinhua that Al-Araby will discuss the French moves to hold an international conference for peace in the Middle East and the 2002 Arab peace initiative dubbed "land for peace."

On June 3, Paris hosted an international ministerial meeting the was attended by the foreign ministers of 25 countries, including four Arab ones. It discussed the revival of the stalled peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Palestinians criticized the final statement of the meeting for not including working mechanisms or time frames for the talks.

Israel publicly rejected the French initiative and said that the best way to achieve peace is direct talks with the Palestinians. Endit
