Besieged Syrian town receives food for first time in years: UN

Xinhua, June 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

A month's supply of food for 2,400 people was delivered overnight to the besieged Syrian town of Darayya, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicated Friday.

Also included on the convoy were other relief items such as nutrition, health, water, sanitation and hygiene and non-food supplies for the city's 4,000 inhabitants.

Conducted by a joint UN and Syrian Arab Red Crescent operation, this was the first shipment of food to reach the city's population since 2012.

The delivery follows last week's initial humanitarian instalment which saw the town receive medical and nutritional supplies for children.

OCHA indicated that the convoy was able to offload humanitarian items smoothly, with operations coming to an end at 3:30 a.m. local time this morning.

Though seen as a positive development, OCHA highlighted the need to grant access to all those in need of humanitarian assistance in the country at war since 2011.

According to UN figures, 4.6 million people currently live in hard-to-reach and besieged areas in Syria. Endit
