Uruguay out as Mexico, Venezuela advance to quarters

Fifteen-time champions Uruguay were shut out of the Copa America Centenario on Thursday as Venezuela and Mexico both advanced into the quarer-finals.

Two goals from Javier Hernandez and Oribe Peralta ensured Mexico's 2-0 victory over Jamaica and a berth in the last eight.

Uruguay, who lost to Venezuela 1-0 in Philadelphia, were sent out in the group phase for the first time since 1997.

"We never found the game we wanted and that cost us," Uruguray's coach Oscar Tabarez said, adding that the ill-fated campaign should serve as a warning to his team as they now look ahead to the resumption of 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Venezuela's winner came with Salomon Rondon's 36th minute goal.

As for Mexico, Chicharito put the side ahead in the 18th minute with a goal and Oribe Peralta scored another on 81st minutes.

Mexico and Venezuela will meet on Monday in Houston to decide the higher seed in the knockout play.

A Mexico win or draw will see them finish first, while Venezuela must win in order to win the group. Endit
