Jamaica seizes 605 pounds of marijuana bound for Suriname

Xinhua, June 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jamaican Customs Agency has seized 605 pounds (about 274.4 kilograms) of marijuana in a container waiting for transshipment to Suriname at the Kingston Container Terminal.

The agency said the "inconsistencies" regarding the shipment alerted the officers and further examination led to the discovery of five packages containing 109 parcels of marijuana earlier this week.

The marijuana reportedly has an approximate street value of 31,000 U.S. dollars.

Jamaica was listed as the largest producer and exporter of cannabis herb in Central America and the Caribbean by the International Narcotics Control Board.
