Irish Senator Denis O'Donovan was elected Cathaoirleach (chairperson) of the Seanad Eireann (Irish Senate) as the country's upper house of parliament met for the first time on Wednesday.

O'Donovan, who is from Irish opposition Fianna Fail (Republican Party), received 44 votes in favor, with six opposing.

Sinn Fein's Rose Conway Walsh contested the role, receiving eight votes.

In Ireland, the Seanad Eireann's main business is to revise legislation sent by the Dail Eireann, the lower house of Irish parliament.

It is made up of 60 members: of those, 43 are elected by five panels of vocational interests; six elected by graduates from the National University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin; and 11 nominated by the Taoiseach (Prime Minister). Endit
