Tanzanian villagers in fear after hyena invasion kills one

Xinhua, June 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Villagers in northern Tanzania's lake zone region of Shinyanga are in fear following the invasion of hyenas, which has killed one man.

Authorities in the area said Wednesday that a group of 20 hyenas stormed Itangunu village in Kahama District, killing one man and some livestock in the village.

"The hyenas' invasion caused villagers to live in fear," said Malale Shingaga, ward councilor for Busoka of Kahama District.

The official said the hyenas stormed the village on Sunday night when many people in the area were asleep.

He said that the invasion caused a commotion in the village as some villagers deserted the village for the fear of the terrestrial carnivore.

"Villagers are now living in fear and some have been forced to relocate their livestock to safer areas," he said.

According to the local leader, the group of hyenas might have strayed from nearby game reserves such as Maswa Game Reserve and those located on the western part of Kahama District.

The official said that village leaders informed the district's natural resource officers, who in collaboration with villagers, managed to chase the wild animals to the game reserves. Enditem
