Australia's NSW to assess damage following 2 dead in ferocious storms

Xinhua, June 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Australia's New South Wales (NSW) state has begun to assess the full extend of the damage after two lives have been lost during weekend storms, which battered the coastline.

The bodies of two people were found in cars caught in floodwaters in separate incidents on Monday in the state's southwest.

"It was a storm so ferocious, it took life from us," NSW state Premier Mike Baird told reporters.

A number of homes on Sydney's northern beaches were partially washed away during the storms, Australian Associated Press reported.

Residents in some areas noted 10 to 15 meters of land had washed away.

"Within three hours we had a garden that was just totally destroyed -- gone," a woman told Network Seven as she inspected her home.

Between 70 and 90 mm of rain fell across Sydney on Sunday, causing flash flooding in some areas.

The NSW State Emergency Service was inundated with more than 9,700 calls for assistance, after strong winds brought down trees and caused structural damage to properties, many of which had suffered flood damage.

The storm whipped up waves as high as 12 meters (40 feet), which caused serious beach erosion and forced hundreds of coastal residents to evacuate. Endit
