Brazil U23 starlet fires Palmeiras into top four

Xinhua, June 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil under-23 starlet Gabriel Jesus netted his fourth goal in six matches as Palmeiras defeated 10-man Flamengo 2-1 in Brazil's Serie A championship on Sunday.

The 19-year-old opened the scoring in the fourth minute by coolly slotting into the bottom corner after Cesar Martins' cross-field pass in his own half was intercepted by Tche Tche.

Alan Patrick equalized minutes later with a long-range effort.

Martins was sent off for a deliberate handball inside the penalty box in the 70th minute and Jean converted the resultant spot-kick.

The result at the Mane Garrincha stadium in Brasilia lifted Palmeiras to fourth in the 20-team standings while Flamengo dropped to fifth.

In other matches on Sunday, Atletico Mineiro defeated Figueirense 1-0, Santos routed Botafogo 3-0, Gremio overcame Ponte Preta 1-0, Atletico Mineiro drew 4-4 at Sport Recife, Vitora beat Internacional 1-0 and Sao Paulo won 1-0 at Cruzeiro. Endit
