Leganes win historic first promotion to La Liga

Leganes made history when the small town club from the south of Madrid earned promotion from the Spanish second division (Liga Adelante) to the BBVA Primera Liga for the first time on Saturday.

A 1-0 win away to Mirandes thanks to a 48th minute Pablo Insua goal was enough to earn Leganes, based in a sleeper town just south of the capital, a ticket to the top flight following Alaves' promotion the previous weekend.

The last weekend of the regular season started with Leganes and Gimnastic Tarragona battling it out for second place with Leganes knowing a win away to Mirandes would see them up, while Gimnastic were at home to Alaves looking for a win and hoping Leganes would drop points.

Gimnastic's game ended in a 1-1 draw and they will go into the play-offs along with Girona, Cordoba and Osasuna, while Bilbao Athletic (Athletic Club Bilbao's B-team), Albacete, Llagostera and Ponferradina were relegated to the third tier of the Spanish game. Endit
