2nd LD Writethru: 21 killed in N. India violence between police, encroachers

Xinhua, June 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 21 people, including a police commander and a police officer, have been killed in a massive clash between police and encroachers which broke out in northern Indian city Mathura in Uttar Pradesh state Thursday, said officials Friday.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav ordered an inquiry into the violence which was triggered by an anti-encroachment police operation in the city.

Meanwhile, Indian Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh expressed anguish over the loss of lives and assured all necessary help to the state government.

The violence had erupted when police were trying to evict illegal occupants, believed to be from a religious sect from Jawahar Bagh, at the order of a local court.

Local TV said the mob attacked police first and were fired at by police later. Endit
