The European Union (EU) here on Thursday expresses condolences to the families of victims and the Somali people, after an attack in Somalia killed more than 10 people and wounded over 20 others on Wednesday.

The spokesperson of the European External Action Service said in a statement that the EU will continue to "support the building of legitimate institutions and a robust Somali security sector to counter terrorism".

"Once again Somalia has been victim of a terrorist attack, which caused numerous casualties following the assault on the Ambassador Hotel in central Mogadishu yesterday," said the statement, adding that the EU's condolences also went to the leaders of Somalia.

"Unity must prevail to overcome differences in the run-up to the elections later this year," it said.

On Wednesday, a vehicle laden with explosives detonated outside the Ambassador Hotel in Mogadishu before three militants stormed inside the building.

Al-Shabaab has already claimed responsibility for the attack. It has been battling the Somali government for years, staging periodic attacks in the country. Endit
