Morocco arrests 6 IS-linked people

Xinhua, June 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Moroccan police arrested on Thursday six people linked to Islamic State (IS) group, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said the arrested, who were operating in the northern cities of Tetouan and Martil as well as the economic capital Casablanca, set up a terrorist cell and planned attacks in the North African kingdom.

According to preliminary information, the cell members have close links to IS fighters, and were receiving orders to establish a splinter group in Morocco, the ministry pointed out.

Dismantling the cell is part of Morocco's proactive efforts to face terrorist threats, the ministry added.

Morocco has seen a growing threat from the IS. Last week, the director of Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation, Abdelhak El Khayam, revealed that Morocco has busted 29 terrorist cells that planned attacks against the North African kingdom in one year. Enditem
