Mozambique grain output expected to decline by 5 percent

Xinhua, June 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Mozambique's grain production is forecast to drop five percent year-on-year to 2.39 million tons for the 2016 harvest, a cabinet minister said Thursday.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Jose Pacheco, blamed the decline on extreme weather patterns -- a drought that affected much of the country's southern and central regions, as well as storms and flooding that hit parts of the north.

The main challenge now is to build and maintain irrigation infrastructure and to regulate river flows for agricultural purposes, Pacheco said, cited by state news agency AIM.

Pacheco also called for efforts to revive the cotton sector, which provides income for around 200,000 households in the country. Endit
