AU condemns hotel bombing in Somalia that killed over 10

Xinhua, June 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Africa Union (AU)'s top envoy for Somalia on Thursday condemned the terrorist attack on hotel in Mogadishu on Wednesday in which more than 10 people were killed and over 20 others wounded, including two lawmakers.

The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Francisco Madeira said the latest attack on Ambassador Hotel will not deter the international community's efforts in stabilizing Somalia.

"The people of Somalia have chosen the path of peace and yearn to build a stable and prosperous nation for the current and future generation and no amount of cowardly acts by terrorists will stop them from realizing this goal," Madeira said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

A vehicle laden with explosives detonated outside the Ambassador Hotel at around 17:40 hrs on Wednesday before three militants stormed inside the building.

According to reports one militant was killed at the entrance of the hotel while the other two managed to enter the building shooting at residents. Al-Shabaab has already claimed responsibility for the unwarranted attack.

The attack on the hotel came hours after Somali officials said a top commander of militant group Al-Shabaab and three other militants were killed in a Wednesday night military operation.

Mohamed Mohamud, better known as Dulyadeyn, allegedly masterminded the April 2015 attack on Kenya's Garissa University College that left 148 people dead, nearly all of them students.

Mandeira said the attack targeting government ministers, politicians and innocent citizens shows that Al-Shabaab militants have "neither regard for the sanctity of human life nor respect for human rights in their selfish and cowardly acts."

The AU envoy condoled with the bereaved families and wishes all those injured quick recovery.

He reaffirmed AMISOM's commitment to working closely with the government of Somalia, the ordinary citizens and international partners to ensure sustainable peace and security in the country. Endit
