Thailand to import liquefied natural gas to meet rising demands

Xinhua, June 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Thailand will likely import more liquefied natural gas to meet increased domestic consumption of the fuel, said a government official on Thursday.

Energy Minister Anantaporn Kanchanarat will shortly consider a plan for the Petroleum Authority of Thailand to import an additional 1.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas from overseas on yearly basis, according to an official with the Ministry of Energy who spoke on condition of anonymity.

PTT, Thailand's state-owned oil and gas conglomerate, which currently has an estimated 10 million tons of LNG in storage, will be likely allowed by the government to increase its yearly storage volume to 11.5 million tons to assure that rising domestic deomand will be adequately met throughout the year, the official said.

Meanwhile, the energy minister plans to have the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) conduct a feasibility study to see whether LNG produced from the existing gulf wells will be returned into gaseous state to feed its power plants on shore in Bangkok and outlying areas, he said.

EGAT would be expected to produce an estimated 5 million tons of natural gas in a year by way of regasification process from some floating LNG storage units based in the gulf, he said. Endit
