Burkina Faso says attack on police post could be terrorist act

Xinhua, June 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso government, through Security Minister Simon Compaore, said it could not rule out the possibility that Wednesday's attack at a police post near the border with Mali in which three Burkinabe police officers died, could be a terrorist act.

"We do not have precise information on the assailants. But as we have seen in the past, they could be jihadists, although this has to be verified," Compaore said.

A security source said the assailants managed to flee with some weapons.

"Security in the area has been beefed up. The army boss has informed us that a sufficient number of soldiers has been deployed to secure the concerned region," the minister said.

Terrorist attacks have become frequent in Burkina Faso and the West African region.

On Jan. 15, 2016, terrorists attacked a hotel and a cafe in the capital Ouagadougou, killing at least 30 people. Al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for the attack.

AQIM equally claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Bamako on Nov. 20, 2015 and that in Abidjan on March 13, 2016. Endit
